People Group Focus:
Walpiri of Australia
Some Walpiri today live in an aboriginal camp in
Katherine town area. The camp is basically a large
area of land set aside for Walpiri housing and development.
Approximately 50 - 60 Walpiri live in the camp at
any one time. The social situation in the Walpiri
Camp is distressing, as many Walpiri suffer from
chronic alcoholism, shame, depression, family disputes,
loss of dignity, drug abuse, child abuse, and social
and health problems.
In Katherine, there are many types of religious
congregations, including the Katherine Baptist Church,
the Lutheran Church, the Uniting Church (Methodists
and Presbyterians combined), the Mormon Church, the
Anglican Church, and the Aboriginal Indigenous Ministries.
Nevertheless, the Walpiri are unevangelized and in
an unstable socio-economic environment. Please lift
the Walpiri up to the Lord with the prayer requests
in thE-TASK.
