The Maze of
Faith
By a Christian worker in South Asia
I often take walks around our city early in
the morning when my schedule allows. I’ve discovered
mornings are my favorite time because of the incredible
amount of activity that is already happening. The vegetable
shops are bustling as most people buy their veggies fresh
daily for their rice/bean/vegetable meals that day. Some
women are sweeping their dirt – yes, I said sweeping
their dirt – it’s important that the area immediately
in front of their gate or door is tidy (dirt can be swept
amazingly clean!) and people are engaging with one another.
In this incredible maze of a city, relationships are very
important to them.
One morning, I decided to venture down a path
I’d not been down before. Our city is very much like
a maze – it was in no way built with vehicles in mind
and there seemed to be no city planner present when it was
actually laid out! So, often you have to ask “Where
does this road go?” I asked this of a young woman
cooking her morning meal on the side of the road and her
answer was, “If you go this way, it comes out at the
top of the hill where everyone washes, if you take the other
path it comes out on the ring road.” She smiled said
goodbye and left it to me to choose my path. So, being up
for the hill I took the uphill direction.
As I was climbing the hill, the discussion
I’d just had reminded me of our spiritual journey.
It’s often such a maze and we have so many choices
of paths to go down. We can choose the uphill one or the
one that goes around the other stuff. Neither is necessarily
wrong, both will eventually get us where we need to go,
but there is a choice to be made. It really made me think
about the maze of my own life. The choices we are currently
facing, which path to go down, where to place our energies
and our focus. I rest in the fact that He will go with us
down whichever path in our maze we end up choosing. Give
some consideration to your own “spiritual mazes”
you’re currently in. Remember He is with us always
– even to the ends of the earth.
