Kham Tibetans
The
Kham Tibetans of China are the largest of the three
major Tibetan people groups. Numbering 1.8 million,
they live in the high, rugged mountains of southwestern
China. They are known as warriors for their history
of banditry and resistance to Chinese occupation.
Nearly all Kham people follow some form of Tibetan
Buddhism. There are a couple of small Catholic communities
among the Kham, but no other churches exist.
The few isolated evangelical believers live under
intense cultural pressure. Evangelical workers recently
learned that a village group of about 27 people, most
of whom are Kham, have received Christ. There is no
Bible that the majority of the Kham can read and understand.
A Kham version of the JESUS film was recently completed,
and a Kham-language gospel radio broadcast is scheduled
to begin in 2003. Ask God to wrap His arms around
the few believers among the Kham. Pray that the Spirit
would draw multitudes of others to Christ. Ask God
to call out laborers to bring in the harvest among
this people group.
