Fall 1999

Week three

So last week you heard that 85 percent of the Fulbe Jeeri (an unreached people group, for those of you who have just joined us) live in Senegal … That’s great, but where is Senegal?

Senegal in a nutshell: Senegal is located on the west coast of Africa, just west of Mali. Senegal is said to be the best introduction to Western Africa, with one of the richest cultures in the region. It doesn’t have the big game parks of Southern and Eastern Africa, but it does boast a mix of centuries of tradition, vibrant culture and wonderful people. People from around the world are attracted to Senegal by the culture, bird reserves, fishing, beaches, scuba diving, music and food. Senegal is also known throughout Africa for its novelists and film directors, talented musicians, the University of Dakar and some of the best peanuts in the world. The culture has a French flavor, spiced with an abundance of West African vitality. The population is 90 percent Muslim. While 70 percent of people farm, fishing and tourism greatly aid the economy.

On the less glamorous side of Senegal: Malnutrition and sanitation are problems in parts of Senegal. Much of the country is covered in spiritual darkness, and there are few Christians there to share the light of Jesus.

The Fulbe Jeeri people of Senegal shepherd thousands of cattle, but who will shepherd them? They need to know the loving Shepherd who will guide them to truth and abundant life!

A summer missionary’s quote from North Africa:

“Although I am quite shy and sometimes get tongue twisted in my second language, I think the love and concern and belief that Jesus is the one calling out to people allowed me to step out. I know I don’t have all the answers or a perfect life or even a perfect faith, but I was willing to be used.”

1 Corinthians 1:26-29, NASB

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.”
