Leaving God in Taiwan

I spent my summer traveling around the island of Taiwan on a sports team. I spent one night at the home of three Chinese sisters. They had a rough home life; their parents are in the Chinese mafia and are in hiding. They now live with three uncles who do not seem to take good care of them.

I spent the night communicating through drawings, charades and anything else that would allow us to get to know each other. At one point, I took out a Chinese/English Bible and gave it to them. They were very thankful and put it on the shelf in their room. I took it back down and asked if they would like to hear the Christmas story. I really did not know where to begin sharing with people who have never heard the gospel before. I told them the Christmas story. When I finished they looked at me expectantly, so I told them about Jesus walking on water. I went to Genesis and told them about creation. Then I asked what they thought about all of it.

They just looked at me in disbelief. They asked if I really believed all of that stuff. I felt bad, as though I had just made God look foolish. I thought I had ruined the opportunity by sharing the wrong thing. The rest of the night we talked about our families and other things.

The next night, I went with another team member to the store where the oldest sister works. She said that she thinks our God is bigger than her gods. She told us that she wants to be like us and share the big God with other people. She said that I left something in her home. I left God.
