Why Go? IWC will join efforts to minister to people in farming villages near Peja, where one venture is helping them to raise jalapeno peppers to make a living. IWC will assist with outreach programs such as crafts, games and sports for children, teenagers, and adults. There will also be opportunities to work in the fields with the locals and help with a building project in a village.

About Kosovo: Kosovo declared independence in February 2008. As a UN administered territory, it is still struggling to recover from the wars of ethnic cleansing in the late 1990's. Memorials continue to dot the countryside. While Kosovo’s government and institutions have sole responsibility for administration of the state, the international presence remains active, including police and NATO military forces. The country is seeking to climb out of poverty and into significance with the European community, but restoration and development are severely limited. IWC will be working in a village near Peja, a mountain city of 90,000.

Cultural Information:  The majority ethnic Albanian population, as well as the Bosniak, Gorani, and Turkish communities, and some of the Roma/Ashkalia/Egyptian communities are adherents of Islam. Nonetheless, many are open to the gospel. The ethnic Serb population is largely Serb Orthodox. Approximately 3% of ethnic Albanians are Roman Catholic. While the country is struggling to establish itself financially and politically, it has benefited from American support and maintains a positive attitude toward Americans.
