![]() About Thailand: A fertile and well-watered land bordering on Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, Thailand is a beautiful country with rain forests, mountains, and coastal beaches. It is also a nation of contrasts with the urban sprawl of Bangkok and the tranquility of quiet rural villages. Chiang Mai, located in the far north of the country near the mountains, has a culture all its own with numerous temples, an old city center that is anchored in long-past dynasties, and many other amentities that attract tourists and ex-pats. Expect hot tropical weather with numerous showers.
Cultural Information: Thailand is a beautiful place of stability and freedom in a troubled region, but “The Land of Smiles” is also awash with difficulties. Political strife in recent years has revealed deep fault lines and disagreement. Corruption is prevalent in business, politics, the military, and police. Thailand is also known the world over for its sex trade, drug networks, and crime syndicates. The dominant religion is Buddhism, with at least 85% of the population devoted adherents. In spite of all this, many believe that people are showing greater intert in the gospel and the Christian church is nearing a breakthrough in growth and multiplication.
